David Byrne & Fatboy Slim Disco Musical ‘Here Lies Love’ is headed to Broadway

Here lies the loveDavid Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s acclaimed “Mind-blowing Disco Musical” about Imelda Marcos opens on Broadway this summer, directed by Alex Timbers and choreographed by Annie-B Parson.

transforming the Broadway theater footprint into a dance club environment, Here lies the love begins with previews on Saturday, June 17, before an official opening night on Thursday, July 20.

Based on the rise and fall of Marcos and the People Power Revolution of the Philippines, Here lies the love features music by Byrne and Fatboy Slim, based on a concept by Byrne, who also provides the lyrics. Additional music is contributed by Tom Gandey and J Pardo.

The result of over a decade of collaboration between Byrne and Fatboy Slim, Here lies the love began as a concept album in 2010 and then had its world premiere as an Off Broadway stage musical at The Public Theater in 2013 to critical acclaim and great popularity with audiences. The show returned to audiences in 2014-2015, debuting at London’s Royal National Theater in 2014 and most recently opening at Seattle’s Repertory Theater in 2017.

The Broadway musical is produced by Hal Luftig, Patrick Catullo, Diana DiMenna for Plate Spinner Productions, Clint Ramos and Jose Antonio Vargas.

“As a team of bi-national American producers – including Filipinos – we are very excited to bring this project with us Here lies the love to Broadway,” the producers said in a joint statement. “We invite everyone to experience this extraordinarily exuberant play. The history of the Philippines is inseparable from the history of the United States, and as both continue to evolve, we couldn’t think of a more opportune time for this show.” The statement ended with, “See you on the dance floor ! “

With the reconstructed space essentially transforming at least part of the Broadway venue into a dance club, the audience can stand, move and dance with the actors. A variety of standing and sitting options will be available, more details to be announced soon.

The creative team includes David Korins (scenic design), Clint Ramos (costume design), Justin Townsend (lighting design), ML Dogg & Cody Spencer (sound design) and Peter Nigrini (projection design). Giselle “G” Töngi is the show’s cultural and social liaison.

Additional members of the creative team will be announced at a later date.
