The famous hero had a specific prototype.

For many years, Eduard Uspensky said and even wrote in the preface to the book “Gena the Crocodile and His Friends” that he had a defective toy that fell all the time, hence the name of the hero – Cheburashka.

However, years later, the writer told the truth about how he came up with a name for an unusual hero. Eduard Uspensky was inspired by his friend’s daughter.

“Once I came to visit a friend in Moscow who had a three-year-old daughter. And then she walks out in something new – a brown fur coat, clearly too big for her. She takes a step, stumbles, falls, and her father immediately picks her up: “Well, that’s crazy!” The word sank into my soul so deeply that when my hero with ears appeared, I immediately remembered that girl and gave him the name Cheburashka, ”Komsomolskaya Pravda recalls the words of the writer.
