Deaths in Entertainment and Media in 2022: Photo Gallery and Obituaries

It has been another difficult year in 2022 as the grief extends to many loved ones and pioneers in show business and the media world who have passed away in the past 12 months.

The acting world has lost giants like Sidney Poitier and Angela Lansbury along with big names like James Caan, Anne Heche, Bob Saget, Kirstie Alley, Ray Liotta, Nichelle Nichols, William Hurt, Louise Fletcher, Robert Clary, Emilio Delgado, Sally Kellerman, Robbie Coltrane, Monica Vitti, Leslie Jordan, John Aniston, Tony Sirico, Charlbi Dean, Tony Dow, Irene Papas and Howard Hesseman His field Mums Estelle Harris and Liz Sheridan.

We also pay tribute to directors like Ivan Reitman, Peter Bogdanovich and Marvin J. Chomsky.

Musicians who have left us in the past year include Jerry Lee Lewis, Loretta Lynn, Olivia Newton-John, Meat Loaf, Ronnie Spector, Naomi Judd, Ramsey Lewis, Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Coolio. Many key figures from popular bands were also lost in 2022, including Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie, Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins, The Ventures’ Don Wilson, Depeche Mode’s Andy Fletcher, Yes’s Alan White, Alabama’s Jeff Cook, Foreigner’s Ian MacDonald, The Specials Terry Hall, Gary Brooker of Procol Harum, Dan McCafferty and Manny Charlton of Nazareth, Keith Levene of Public Image Ltd., Rick Anderson of The Tubes, Maxi Jazz of Faithless and Bill Pittman, guitarist extraordinaire of The Wrecking Crew.

Memorable songwriters Marilyn Bergman and Lamont Dozier also checked in, and radio waves crackled less with the loss of PJ O’Rourke, Ralph Emery and Michael Jackson.

Popular comedians we’ve mourned over the past year include Louie Anderson, Judy Tenuta, Gallagher and The Amazing Johnathan.

Two beloved members of the VFX community also died in Robert Blalac and Douglas Trumbull, as well as comic artists Tim Sale and Neil Adams.

The sports world also lost football great Pelé, NBA’s Bill Russell, golfers Kathy Whitworth, NFL’s Len Dawson and Franco Harris, and 67-year-old Dodgers announcer Vin Scully.

And the flower power era seems to be getting longer and longer with the death of Woodstock promoter Michael Lang hair Co-creator/star James Rado.

Meanwhile, the world also mourned the loss of two landmark geopolitical figures in Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union.

And we at Deadline have lost our founder and inspiration, Nikki Finke.
