Seven killed in explosion in kebab restaurant in Turkey: three children among the dead after a suspected gas leak

An explosion at a kebab shop in western Turkey killed seven people, including three children, on Friday.

An official said a gas leak may have caused the explosion.

The governor of Aydin province told Turkish broadcaster CNN Turk that five others were injured, one of whom was in critical condition.

Governor Huseyin Aksoy said initial testimony from a restaurant worker indicated that a cooking gas cylinder had leaked, leading to an explosion around 3:35 p.m. local time.

Reporters also said there was a fire after the explosion at the restaurant in Aydin’s Nazilli district. Photos showed fire trucks and ambulances at the scene.

Television footage showed the charred remains of the two-story restaurant, with windows and doors blown away in the blast.

Another shows a firefighter standing by a bare window frame on the first floor, helping with the operation.

The Minister of Justice of the Republic of Turkey, Bekir Bozdag, tweeted: “The person who allegedly caused the explosion has been arrested.

“May our Lord not allow such painful events to hit our people and country again.”
