Online fan tributes describe Deodato as “misunderstood” and “innovative”.

One fan wrote: “RIP Ruggero Deodato. Cannibal Holocaust will forever be remembered as one of the most extraordinary pieces of horror film ever made. A true craftsman who could strike in all genres.”

Another said: “RIP Ruggero Deodato. Masterful, revolutionary, misunderstood today and in his time. May you be uncensored in heaven, Ruggero.”

By far his most infamous film, Cannibal Holocaust, featured scenes of the slaughter of real animals, sparking global outrage and leading to a screening ban in several countries.

Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone and Eli Roth are among famous directors who credit Deodato as an early influence on their work.

The special effects in the bloody horror film were so realistic that by the time of its release, Deodato was arrested on suspicion of murdering his cast, earning him the nickname “Monsieur Cannibal” in France.

The murder charges were dropped when Deodato was able to bring some of the presumed dead actors to a court hearing, but he was found guilty of animal cruelty. That conviction was overturned in 1984.

In 2011, Deodato defended the scenes that caused the most outrage.

He said: “In my childhood, when I was growing up, I spent a lot of time in the country near animals and therefore often saw the moment of their death.

“While the death of animals is unbearable – especially in a modern urban mindset – it always fed the characters or the crew, both in story and in reality.”

He said he was inspired by terrorism in Italy in the 1970s and the strong visual images in the news of people being killed or maimed.

Deodato started as an assistant director in the 1960s and has directed comedies, crime films and musicals throughout his career.

He has a son from a short-lived marriage in the 1970s.

What is Cannibal Holocaust about?

Set in the Amazon rainforest, the film follows an academic who searches for a missing American documentary crew.

The crew is feared to have been eaten by a local tribe. The academic stumbles upon a film the team made before their deaths, showing the burning of a village, the rape of tribal women and violent scenes.

The film clearly shows how the local population took revenge on the documentary filmmakers.

Deodato convinced the cast to “disappear for a year” after the film to make it even more authentic.

He said: “Back then I had to do something shocking to get noticed.

“I couldn’t kill real people, so the animals were killed, but all the animals were eaten, they didn’t just kill for the film.”
