Just a few days before Christmas Eve, you still don’t know what to wear? It’s definitely time to go back to your closets to see what’s lying around. Sometimes, all you need is a new way to accessorize a forgotten suit or an outfit that has already been worn many times to give you a makeover. Especially if you find… velvet!
Accessorize differently, swap with friends or secondhand
For accessorize what you already have in a different way, you can for example try surrounding a jumpsuit with a pretty silk scarf with a colorful print to give it an extra touch of elegance. Or add massive necklaces to an everyday outfit where you know you feel good.
There is also the option ofcall one or two people with more or less the same morphology as you to offer them to swap some clothes. Perhaps a piece that you are tired of wearing will make them a great outfit for Christmas Eve while giving you an ideal flamboyant look for your New Year.
If despite these simple precautions that cost little time (and nothing to the wallet or the planet) you still want to buy a new garment, the second-hand option is risky but you can still try: in physical stores, or by organizing a personal delivery meeting fixed with people found on Vinted for example!
Finally, the option of the new remains. And at the moment, in first-hand stores that have the advantage of having a showcase and dressing rooms where you can wear different sizes and models to find the one that fits you best, you can find very velvety. Like every end of the year, in fact…
Why does velvet remain the star material of the holidays, year after year?
And for good reason: the velvet is soft to the touch and warm to wear, so perfect for a close banquet in cold weather ! (Although it would be better to stay away from each other in a breezy place respecting barrier gestures because the pandemic continues to be part of the party, alas.)
Made with a weaving machine with two warp systems which allows to obtain a layer of structure and a second fabric in shaved loops for the velvety, velvet gives depth and softness to an outfit.
If it forms more stripes, then we are talking about corduroy, which refines the silhouette. With dense and uniform curls, it is called palatine (or panne velvet) and plays great at night.
But it can also appear more playful as well decadent, devoured version (o crushed velvet in English): it is then that it forms irregular clusters (because its curls are then oriented and shaved in different directions), which reflect the light in different ways. It creates a time-worn effect (and it’s in this destroyed version that I personally prefer it, as you can see in the vlog by Lose at the 2021 Halloween Festival at the Manoir de Paris).
In short, soft, warm, versatile, velvet is not just for teachers mathematics and geohistory from high school. She perfectly knows how to shine for the end of the year celebrations, both in front of her mother-in-law and for New Year’s Eve!
