Hulu has canceled the comedy series "Not Suitable for Work" after a single season, E! News confirmed. The decision comes two months after the Mindy Kaling-created show aired its season one finale.
The nine-episode series premiered in June, starring Jack Martin, Avantika, Ella Hunt, Nicholas Duvernay and Will Angus. It followed five professionals in their early 20s navigating love and drama in a shared New York City apartment building.
Following the news, Kaling, an "Office" alum, thanked the cast and crew. In an August 25 social media post, the 47-year-old wrote, "I love this show, I loved making this show, I love these people, and I love all of you for all your sweet comments, messages, edits and for watching."
Cliffhanger ending
The cancellation leaves the show's New Year's Eve cliffhanger unresolved. The final episode saw Hunt's character AJ kiss Davis, played by Angus, after learning he had a months-long crush on her.
The kiss was witnessed by Davis's best friend Josh Teitelbaum, played by Martin. Josh, described as a nepo baby and aspiring journalist, was planning to ring in the new year with AJ before he saw the kiss. The two had recently repaired their relationship after he ghosted her following a college hookup, and romantic feelings had started to develop between him and his neighbor.
In a June interview with TVLine, Kaling said the final scene was planned from the start. "When I was still working on the pilot for the show two years ago, the image of Josh walking down the hallway, and before I even knew what was going to happen in the first season, I really wanted the last image of season one to be him seeing his best friend who he loves kissing the girl of his dreams, which is someone that he has complicated feelings about," she said.
Kaling noted that they "worked backwards" from that point, adding that she knew it would be the final moment when she was hiring staff.
She acknowledged the storyline was left "really wide open" for the show, which featured cameos from Ego Nwodim, Constance Wu, and Gigi Hadid, who made her onscreen acting debut in the series.
"I love secrets and the lies in the show, so deciding whether or not Josh was going to tell Davis and AJ that he saw the kiss, whether Josh was even gonna show up at all anymore for that night, those were all the things we knew we had to pay off," Kaling said. "But it was really fun figuring out where we were gonna go, and I had no idea."
Hulu had not yet responded to E! News' request for comment.
Streaming renewals and cancellations
The announcement joins a wave of recent television renewals and cancellations. Netflix renewed Guy Ritchie's drama "The Gentlemen" for a third season ahead of its September 3 season two premiere. The streamer also ordered a fourth season of the reality series "America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders" and a third season of "Quarterback," a docuseries following top-tier NFL athletes.
Other Netflix shows are coming to a close. The sci-fi series "The Boroughs" from "Stranger Things" creators the Duffer Brothers was canceled after one season, according to Deadline. "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder," an adaptation of Holly Jackson's book trilogy, will conclude with its upcoming third season to bring Pip's investigation to an end. "Emily in Paris," starring Lily Collins, will end with a sixth season set in Greece, while the Manuel Garcia-Rulfo legal drama "The Lincoln Lawyer" finishes with its fifth season.
Prime Video ordered sophomore seasons for the teen drama "Sterling Point," taking fans back to Muskoka, and "Every Year After," a series based on Carley Fortune's Barry's Bay universe.
Hulu greenlit a sixth season of "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives," following the MomTok group's drama-plagued fifth season. The Australian drama "The Artful Dodger" will end with its third season on Hulu in 2027. "The Handmaid's Tale" spinoff "The Testaments," starring Chase Infiniti, was renewed for a second season.
Premium cable and network changes
The "Big Bang Theory" time-travel spinoff "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" will return for a second season on HBO Max, alongside season two of the HBO Stephen King adaptation "IT: Welcome to Derry."
The HBO drama "Euphoria" will end with its third season. Following the May 31 finale featuring Zendaya's character Rue, creator Sam Levinson confirmed the conclusion on the New York Times' Popcast.
"In terms of the story that we set out to tell, which is a story about addiction and its consequences, this feels like the end to me," Levinson said. "Looking back, you know, on the last eight years, I think it was such a kind of fulfilling journey in terms of this cast, the crew, what we were able to accomplish."
Showtime's "Yellowjackets" will conclude with its fourth season premiering November 20. On Starz, Shemar Moore announced the "S.W.A.T." spinoff "S.W.A.T. Exiles" received a season two renewal before its season one premiere.
NBC canceled the drama "The Hunting Party" after two seasons, per Deadline, while ABC's "American Idol" will return for season 25 next year in its search for the next music superstar.
More television updates
Peacock renewed "The Five Star Weekend," based on Elin Hilderbrand's novel, and ordered a third season of "Love Island: Beyond the Villa," following season eight bombshells as they transition back to real life.
Paramount+ canceled the comedy "Colin From Accounts," which returns for its third and final season September 10, but renewed the "Yellowstone" spinoff "Dutton Ranch" for season two.
Apple TV+ renewed the travel series "The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy" for a fourth season, and ordered second seasons for the Elle Fanning comedy "Margo's Got Money Troubles" and the New England series "Widow's Bay," starring Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a haunted island.
The Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston series "The Morning Show" will end with season five on Apple TV+ in 2027.

Elsewhere, Acorn TV renewed the Brooke Shields murder mystery "You're Killing Me" for season two. Samsung TV Plus ordered a second season of "Hooligans: The ARCH Racing Project," following Keanu Reeves, Gard Hollinger, and riders Corey Alexander and Jeremy McWilliams competing in the MotoAmerica professional motorcycle road racing series.
