Interior designer Hillarys’ calculator is based on a formula that follows the body’s natural rhythms.

According to the NHS, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night – which equates to five or six 90-minute cycles.

Waking up to an alarm in the middle of one of the cycles often makes getting out of bed as challenging as it can disrupt deep sleep, according to the Sleep Council.

Each sleep cycle consists of several phases, starting with three phases of Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (NREM) that get progressively deeper, followed by a fourth phase of Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (REM) in which we dream deeply enough.

Waking up during REM sleep can leave you feeling tired for the rest of the day, so it’s best to wake up between cycles.

For example, if you wake up at 6:30 am. need to get up, the calculator will tell you at 9:16 p.m., 10:46 p.m., 12:16 p.m. or 1:46 a.m. to go to bed.

When calculating your sleep schedule, remember that it takes most people about 14 minutes to fall asleep.

While adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep, children need between nine and thirteen hours.

And babies and toddlers usually need between 12 and 17 hours of sleep a day, which the NHS says is essential for them to develop and process the new experiences and skills they learn.

Children’s need for sleep gradually decreases with age, small children need 12-14 hours, 12- to 18-year-olds only eight to nine hours.

This means parents can put their children to bed at 19:46 and have three hours to themselves before they can fully sleep.

Yvonne Keal, senior product manager at hillarys.co.uk, told MailOnline: “We all know how important a good night’s sleep is.

“It can improve focus, reduce stress and even keep our hearts healthy.

But according to a YouGov data tracker, a whopping 78 per cent of Brits don’t get the recommended eight hours of sleep a night.

“The modern, always-on lifestyle and busy home environments can actively prevent us from getting the rest we need.”
