Preview ‘No Bears’: Winner of the Jury Prize by Jafar Panahi in Venice

Sideshow and Janus Films have a new US trailer for No bears – the ninth film from award-winning Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi (taxi, The circle), which opens on Friday, December 23 at the Filmforum in New York and January 13 at the Laemmle Royale in Los Angeles.

In No bearsAs in much of his recent work, Panahi plays a fictionalized version of himself. In this case, he moves to a rural border town to direct a new film in nearby Turkey, the story of which is a stark reflection of the troubling events that begin to unfold around him. As he struggles to complete his film, Panahi finds himself in the middle of a local scandal that confronts the opposing forces of tradition and progress, town and country, faith and evidence, and the universal desire to reject oppression.

While Panahi’s acclaimed film had its world premiere at the 79th Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize, the filmmaker was absent when he was arrested in Iran last summer and sentenced to six years in prison. It comes after several public criticisms of his home government – including the arrests of his colleagues Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa al-Ahmad – and was not the director’s first brush with the law, as he was arrested in 2010 on charges of spreading anti -government propaganda.

Written, directed and produced by Pinahi, No bears also Naser Hashemi, Vahid Mobaseri, Bakhtiar Panjei, Mina Kavani, Narjes Dalaram and Reza Heydari. Watch the trailer for the film by clicking above.
