Quentin Tarantino revealed that he originally wanted to pitch Adam Sandler in the role of the bear Jew in Inglourious Basterds. I would have loved to see Sandler as Sergeant Donny “The Bear Jew” Donowitz! It would have been much better than Eli Rot.
Tarantino brought it up in a recent episode of Bill Maher Random club podcast and was joined by Judd Apatow. The reason Sandler didn’t do it is because Apatow already had Sandler locked up for Funny peoplewhich is a shame because Inglourious Basterds it was a much better movie.
Tarantino said: “[Judd and I ] they met through Adam Sandler during the time I did Little Nicky. I was like hanging out with that crew for a while. We went to a lot of different things together. But also Freaks and misfits it had just aired or was about to air and i had missed it, but all of this Happy Madison the crowd was crazy about it.
Apatow chimed in and said, “I feel bad because when I did that Funny people with Sandler, I didn’t know it was the exact time you were trying to use it Inglourious Basterds.”
Tarantino replied, “Obviously he should have done yours because of the whole thing. I mean, you start with the fucking videotape of you guys. But yeah, the Bear Jew was going to… I wrote the Bear Jew for Adam Sandler. When I was doing Little Nicky, he’s like, ‘Oh man, can I fucking beat Nazis with a bat? Fucking script! Fucking awesome! Can’t wait, damn it! I can’t wait, damn it!’ It was like saying to every Jewish kid, ‘I want to play this guy who beats Nazis with a fucking bat.'”
He went on to say, “Here’s the problem. [Judd] packed up all the good Jews [for Funny People]. That was the problem. Seth Rogen and all the good Jews were doing Funny people. I’m killing Hitler with baseball bats and there are no good Jews available! David Krumholtz, nobody! All the good Jews were all packed! I’m doing the Jewish male fantasy!
It’s a shame things didn’t work out with Sandler. Seeing him play The Bear Jew is something I would have loved to see!
