Historical fiction author Alan Gratz takes on CAPTAIN AMERICA with a spooky new tale

Famous for his historical novels, Alan Graz is making his graphic novel debut with none other than the first Avenger, Captain America. In Captain America: The Phantom ArmyGratz blends true history with fantasy superhero history to create a new legend for the ghost army.

The Phantom Army was a real unit that fought in World War II starting in January 1944 and was made up of artists, actors, sound engineers and advertising professionals who used inflatable tanks, giant loudspeakers, fake radio broadcasts and other props and tricks to fool the Axis powers. Here is the official synopsis of the story:

It’s World War II, and Captain America and Bucky Barnes come face-to-face with a threat unlike any they’ve ever seen. The dead of this war and past wars are coming back to life, impervious to bullets, flames and even the Allied Cap shield. Armies rise from the ground in the night and seem to disappear without a trace. With the help of The Ghost Army, an American tactical deception unit armed with multimedia weapons, Captain America and Bucky must figure out how to fight something that’s already dead. And what is the connection with the mysterious Baron Mordo, who watches over the battle from his castle atop Mount Wundagore?

Sounds like a good story for both old and new Captain America fans. I think it’s cool that Gratz is using WWII for more of a setting, but taking real aspects of it to the story of him. It will be interesting to see what the actual solution will be to not only fighting the ghosts, but also keeping them in their graves. You can grab your copy when it releases January 3, 2023 for $14.99.
