Did Jack Dawson (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) die unnecessarily in the film? titanic when he decided not to board the wooden door life raft with his beloved Rose (Kate Winslet)?
Fans have long debated whether Jack could have climbed aboard the wooden door and possibly saved himself from his dramatic hypothermic drowning after the ship’s sinking.
Tired of the endless fan debate, the film’s director James Cameron decided to give the definitive answer.
On tour to promote his new film Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron reminded everyone that he always said Jack had to die because of the drama. being Romeo and Juliet finally in the North Atlantic.
But now Cameron has told the Toronto Sun that he has conducted a scientific study to prove “once and for all” that Jack would not have survived even if he hoisted himself onto the floating door.
“We did a scientific study to end this whole thing and put a stake in his heart once and for all,” Cameron said. “We have since done a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the film and we will do something special with it, which will be released in February.”
The test went like this: “We took two stunt people who had the same body weight as Kate and Leo and we put sensors over them and inside them and we put them in ice water and we tested if they could survive. a variety of methods and the answer was that they both could not possibly have survived. Only one could survive.”
This conclusion differs from that of the Minister MythBusters TV show that tried the same type of test in 2012. Their conclusion: “With everything we’ve learned, I think Jack’s death was unnecessary,” co-host Jamie Hyneman concluded. So yes, it’s plausible that both Jack and Rose could have survived on the plate if they had MacGyvered their life jacket.
Of course, that all goes out the window as Cameron told the stories and had a different vision. According to him, Jack “had to die”.
“It’s a film about love and sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice,” Cameron said.
He hopes it will air alongside a 4K theatrical re-release after the National Geographic Special in February titanicthe case will be settled.
“Maybe after 25 years I won’t have to deal with it anymore,” he joked.
