‘Broker’ is the story of a young woman, So-young (Ji-eun Lee), who decides to drop off her newborn baby in a church through the ‘baby box’ system. When So-young regretfully returns, she meets Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) and Dong-soo (Dong-won Gang), two men who steal abandoned children to sell them to parents willing to pay a fee. Hearing about the business, he decides to join them in their search for the perfect adoptive parents. As these three characters embark on a road trip that will forever seal their destinies and that of the boy, police detective Su-jin (Doona Bae) and her partner Lee (Lee Joo-young) closely follow the expected group. take action and conclude six months of investigations.

The director interviewed people who had passed through orphanages when their parents decided to leave them and they wondered if there really was anything good about them to deserve to be born. For these boys and girls for whom there are no simple and easy words of comfort, Kore-eda made the film: “In ‘Broker’ I tried to look at life and get into the characters to speak with my own voice. It’s a film that looks like a prayer, or a fervent wish”describes it in the production notes.

At the Cannes Film Festival ‘Broker’, the first Korean film by the Japanese filmmaker, was nominated for the Palme d’Or and won two awards: one for Kore-eda and another for Song Kang-ho, its leading man, in the best actor category.
