The Nordic countries all have majestic beauty as well as the dangers that come with wilderness. The Nordic horror RPG by Vaesen plunges into those perils as players work to solve mysteries of a more supernatural nature.
Based on the work of Swedish illustrator and author Johan Egerkrans, the game takes place in a dark gothic setting steeped in Nordic folklore and ancient myths of Scandinavia. A new book has arrived on the scene for the ENNIE-winning board game, Vaesen’s Seasons of Mystery. It features four different mysteries, each of which occurs during a season of the year. Here is the breakdown of each scenario:
-
A dance of death: Travel to the green valleys of Dalarna in the idyllic spring to investigate strange happenings in a remote village and solve a deadly mystery. Written by Gabrielle de Bourg.
-
Fire heart: Religious fervor runs high in rural Småland, as the hottest summer in living memory causes massive forest fires, poor crops, widespread poverty and a mass exodus to America. Will you find out what’s behind it all and live to tell the story? Written by Tomas Harenstam.
-
The devil on the moor: Travel west to the windswept autumn moors of Grimsted Lyng and investigate a tale of terror where modernity pits against the old ways. Written by Andrew Marklund.
-
Winter’s Tale: Cross the Baltic Sea and brave the snowy forests of Ingria, where an unknown being stalks the night under twinkling stars. Written by Kiku Pukk Härenstam.
All of these scenarios look super fun to play. During the holidays would be the perfect time to bring it out and try A Winter’s Tale. The game uses an adapted Year Zero engine, so if you are familiar with games like Mutant Year Zero you have a knowledge of the basics of the game. The premise sounds very similar Call of Cthulhu but instead of being based on Lovecraft it has more real world folk elements which really appeal to me. I also love the art in this game, I’ll include some below for you to enjoy. If you want a more mythical type of mystery board game, I think it would definitely be worth a try.
