After registering a very modest rise last weekend, taking in a total of 3.64 million euros, the Spanish box office fell again, remaining (by the hair) under three million. Specifically, from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 December, the total was 2.91 million and 438,686 viewers, according to data from Comscore. With the World Cup still underway and a dearth of event premieres drawing crowds, it seems cinema hasn’t been the first entertainment option for most Spaniards in recent weeks.
In this almost bleak landscape, with the billboard waiting for the boost that ‘Avatar: Water Sense’ will no doubt give, ‘A todo tren 2’ had a free hand to repeat at the top, adding a stunning €806,316 in its second week, which represents a drop of only 13% from its premiere. In total, the family comedy directed by Inés de León has collected 2.92 million, which once again demonstrates the good health enjoyed by the Spanish comedy.

The rest of the top 5 also repeats, occupying exactly the same positions as last week. In 2 continues ‘Strange World’, Disney’s latest animated bet, which is having a passage in theaters well below expectations, which will generate financial losses for the studio. Even so, the adventure film, which arrives on Disney+ on December 23, recorded the slightest drop in the top 10 (just 12%), with €396,195 more for a total of €2.17 million in three weeks. This is followed by ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which keeps 3 with 265,979 euros more, which add up to a total of 7.21 million euros; ‘As bestas’ in 4, which after being nominated for 17 Goya awards, is close to 3 million (2.83). And the black comedy ‘El menú’, which collected 244,497 euros between Friday and Sunday and was close to one million in the second week (942,753 euros).
Not everything is bad. From the current list we draw two good conclusions: viewers choose original films (only two titles in the top 10 are sequels) and Spanish cinema continues to be strong this year (half of the top 10 are self-produced films). The irreverent Christmas action comedy ‘Silent Night’, starring David Harbor as Santa Claus, moves up one place (from 7 to 6) in its second week, earning a total of €568,779; while Álex de la Iglesia once again signs a success with ‘El cuarto pasajero’ which also rises (from 8 to 7). His total tally now stands at 4.16 million after 7 weeks into the bill.
The top 10 is closed by ‘Venus’, which adds 101,100 euros to a total that does not reach half a million -Jaume Balagueró’s terrifying new bet is struggling to find its audience-; ‘Mrs. Harris’ trip to Paris’, the only novelty of the week, which with 100,183 euros is in ninth place; and ‘Stories not to be told’, which drops to 10 and reduces the chances of reaching one million (has 770,414 euros in total). The rest of the new releases debuted outside the top ten, such as ‘El protector (The Enforcer)’, at 11, or ‘Mantícora’, at 13 with 44,543 euros. Sure, Carlos Vermut’s new film was only released in 60 cinemas, obtaining one of the best averages per cinema of the week: 742 euros.

If the last few weeks have been characterized by a high volume of releases on the Spanish billboard, Friday, December 16, most distributors step back before the imminent arrival of “Avatar: The Sense of Water”, the highly anticipated sequel directed by James Cameron, which arrives 13 years after the original. Few dare compete with the Na’vi, but there are options for those uninterested in the blockbuster from 20th Century Studios and Disney. Curiously, they are all European: ‘EO’, the award-winning Polish drama about a donkey, the acclaimed ‘Aftersun’, starring Paul Mescal (‘Normal People’), the French animated film ‘Little Nicholas’, the Swiss film ‘ The saint of the impossible’ and the Spanish ‘The yellow roof’.
