The prestigious production house A24 has announced that it will be released in 2023 ‘Beau Is Afraid’, the third film by director and screenwriter Ari Aster, who has established himself as one of the most recognized filmmakers in recent years for his work on ‘Midsommar’ and ‘Hereditary’. Aster said little about the new project, but defined the tape as “an intimate portrait spanning several decades of the life of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time”as published by IndieWire.
Joaquin Phoenix is the protagonist of the film, sharing the cast with Nathan Lane, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan and Parker Pose. In the poster published by the production company we see a boy (probably the younger version of Joaquin Phoenix) wearing gray silk pajamas engraved with the name Beau.
The synopsis hasn’t been revealed yet, but a short film called “Beau” that Aster made in 2011 could have served as inspiration. In it, we see a neurotic man whose trip to visit his mother is delayed when his house keys mysteriously disappear. Gradually the events become more and more sinister and violent, but also more incomprehensible. Of an unclassifiable genre, between thriller and black humour, the short also fits perfectly with how the director describes his next film: as “a nightmarish comedy”.
However, the similarity in the title may be a coincidence, since “Beau Is Afraid” was not the tape’s original title, which was originally called “Disappointment Blvd.” (In Spanish it would be translated as “The Avenue of Disappointment”).
It’s not horror
Despite his acclaimed career in the world of terror, ‘Beau Is Afraid’ does not belong to this genre, according to Aster himself: “It might be a few movies before I get back to making horror films, but I love horror and I’m sure I’ll be back”. On the other hand, it is clear that there is one thing he intends to keep: “Head injuries will ALWAYS have a place in my films”.
