A beautiful sound, the Neil Diamond Musical grossed more than $1 million at the box office for the week leading up to and including Sunday’s opening night. The jukebox bio-musical fills 91% of seats at Broadhurst & Julia, Leopoldstadt and The piano lesson as one of the strongest newcomers of the fall season.
Although critics were mixed on the show, Beautiful sound earned $1,011,961 in the week ending December 4. A viral video of Diamond herself attending opening night and surprising audiences with a rendition of “Sweet Caroline” after the show could go a long way to lighten those ratings, or eclipse them all together.
Glowing reviews for is not a motherThe Lee Daniels presentation of Jordan E. Cooper’s razor-sharp comedy, which also opened last week, could help the play’s box office in the coming weeks, but the show got off to a rather slow start, earning just $120,001 and 69% of that seats with a small average ticket price of $21.36 at the Belasco.
Overall, the 35 Broadway productions grossed $33,891,293 last week, down 10% from the previous week, largely due to an 11% drop in the average ticket price after Thanksgiving (from about $145 to $128). Total attendance remained about the same at 264,069, about 83% of capacity (same as last week).
Also of interest The skim of the opera had another sell-out week, even after producer Cameron Mackintosh granted the long-running musical an eight-week extension following its previously announced closing in January (the new closing date is April 16). Alone in the Majestic’s standing room, ghost took a sample of $1,966,059.
For the season to date, Broadway has grossed $804,379,045 with a total admission rate of 6,333,023 at an approximately 87% seat load rate.
