“Have you ever had the feeling that we are incapable of not caring about each other? People are amazing.” These words alone fill the powerful trailer for ‘The Whale’, Darren Aronofsky is new which also marks the return of Brendan Fraser to a leading role in theatres. For this work, the actor of “The mummy (The mummy)” or “George of the jungle” received a more than six-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, where it had its world premiere. The film arrives in theaters in our country on January 27th and on eCartelera we bring you exclusively the Spanish trailer:
Based on the play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter, the film tells the story of Charlie, a lonely and severely obese English teacher who knows he has little time to live. With hopes of redemption, Charlie tries to reconcile with his teenage daughter, but will also have to use his whole heart to deal with various traumas and a love hidden for decades. Besides Fraser, ‘The Whale’ stars Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, Samantha Morton and Sathya Sridharan.

Aronofsky assures that he has wanted to adapt ‘The Whale’ to cinema since he saw the work almost a decade ago: “What I like best about ‘The Whale’ is that it invites you to see the humanity of characters who are neither good nor bad, but rather live in those gray tones that ordinary people live in; characters who have a life deep and tangled interior”explains the director of ‘Mother!’, “It is a story that asks us a simple and at the same time essential question: can we save each other? It’s a very important question right now, especially now that we’re turning away from each other more than ever. This is cinema for me.”
A virtuous comeback
After years away from the media spotlight, although he was one of the most popular actors and box office hits of the 90s, Fraser’s career once again takes a radical turn with ‘The Whale’, a project that required a great deal of vulnerability by him to play Charlie. It was a risky bet to return to the cinema with a role that requires a radical physical transformation, an aspect as important to the character as the psychological one. “I admit I was intimidated”Fraser says, “I was very afraid to accept the role, but it made me understand the importance of introspection even more deeply than I thought I could. It may have been an antithetical choice, but I had never been asked to do such a thing, which is to combine everything I had learned during my professional career, that I combine all the elements of interpretation in the same character and, moreover, thus expose my entire inner world. I appreciate the opportunity.”
He took a chance and it’s clear he won, because Fraser has already earned a Golden Globe nomination and all predictions indicate that he will get one at the next Oscars as well. ‘The Whale’ hits Spanish cinemas on January 27 from YouPlanet.
