IMAX China Holding, Inc and IMAX Corporation have appointed CAA China veteran Daniel Manwaring as CEO of IMAX China. He succeeds interim CEO Jiande Chen, who returns to his full-time role as vice chairman of IMAX China. Manwaring takes over from 9 January 2023.
Manwaring most recently led CAA China’s Motion Picture Group, a role in which he helped bridge to and within the local market, creating opportunities for clients around the world and building strong relationships throughout the Chinese film community. The managing director has years of experience working with Chinese film producers and a sound financial background.
China is an important market for IMAX, which has steadily expanded its presence there, including work on local blockbusters.
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said: “During his successful ten-year tenure at CAA, Daniel has proven extremely adept at managing Chinese blockbusters that resonate with audiences – a talent that will serve IMAX well as we unique position at the heart of China’s entertainment ecosystem. Daniel’s expertise, creativity and years of working with Chinese filmmakers, the China Film Bureau and leading film financing and distribution companies will be extremely valuable to IMAX China as we continue to expand our leadership in this strong theater market.
Manwaring said: “As a long-time believer in the power of film and the irreplaceable magic of the theater experience, I am delighted to work with Rich and the team at IMAX China to continue to grow this amazing company and expand, providing new opportunities for growth and diversification and deepening connection with Chinese consumers.”
Manwaring, who has lived in China since 2006 and is fluent in Mandarin, has been with CAA in China since 2012 and took on his most recent role in 2018, representing some of the industry’s best filmmakers and leading CAA’s media financing in the region. Over the past four years, he has curated more than a dozen local and Hollywood films for release in Chinese cinemas. He also played a key role in the formation of financing and sales entities in the region.
