Jennifer Lawrence and Viola Davis sat down together in an interview format hosted by Variety to quiz each other and discuss the perks of the trade. Both have cinematic heroine roles in common: in Lawrence’s case, the saga of ‘The Hunger Games’, which brought her worldwide fame, while Davis is currently seen as Nanisca in ‘The King Woman’, a role which has earned him the absolute admiration of critics. Davis will also play the role of Dr. Volumnia Gaul in “The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, which opens in 2023. It is precisely the saga based on the novels by Suzanne Collins where Lawrence is apparently wrong, as she seems to describe herself as the first woman to direct an action film..

“I remember when I was making ‘The Hunger Games’ no one had ever cast a woman for the lead role in an action movie”Said the one who played Katniss Everdeen. This, as her followers have pointed out, is not true: As innovative as the saga was, it was by no means the first time that a woman directed a film of this genre., taking into account the existence of iconic films such as “Kill Bill”, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” or “Alien, the eighth passenger”, among many others. Lawrence clarified his words: “That’s not what I meant at all. I know I’m not the only woman to have starred in an action movie. What I wanted to emphasize was how good it feels”. However, she takes responsibility for what he said and admits it “It was a mistake and it was misunderstood”attributing it to nerves to be faced with “legend” like Viola Davis.
Lawrence wasn’t wrong, as the magnitude of ‘The Hunger Games’ once again revealed the positive impact female leads have, especially for a younger audience. Let’s not forget that more and more women are starring in action films (and not just models). “We’ve been told that both girls and boys can identify with a male lead, but boys cannot identify with a female lead…”says the actress. “It makes me so happy every time a movie comes out that debunks every one of those beliefs and proves it’s nothing but a lie to keep certain people out of movies”stating that this is also the case with “The King Woman”, which he considers “best movie I’ve seen this year and in a long time”.
After being a hero
On Apple TV + it is available the new Jennifer Lawrence, where we can see the other side of heroism: This is ‘Causeway’, a film from A24 production company in which he plays a soldier who has to go home to recover after suffering brain damage during the war in Afghanistan. The actress received rave reviews for her work on the film alongside the acclaimed Brian Tyree Henry.
