In Quentin Tarantino’S Once upon a time in Hollywoodthere is a great scene where Leonardo DicaprioRick Dalton’s character walks into his trailer and has a complete meltdown after forgetting his lines on set. This collapse is one of my favorite parts of the film and it was completely improvised.
In a recent interview with the 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast, Tarantino opened up about this scene and detailed how he helped DiCaprio prepare, explaining:
“What happened there was, I knew I wanted to have that scene but I didn’t want to write it. I didn’t want it to be dialogue, she recalled. So I took Leo and I was like, ‘So look, here’s what I want to do: I want you you walk in having fucked up on set not knowing your lines and i want you to walk into the trailer and have a mad rage at yourself, a hate fest, a full blown tantrum at yourself just a giant pity fest where you lose your shit, but against yourself, nobody else. And I want it to have the randomness of an improvisation, it comes out of you.’
Tarantino went on to talk about how he helped DiCaprio, saying:
“Now, what I did, though, is I gave him several topics that he could rant about. ‘Here’s a topic, here’s a topic, here’s something you could say.’ And he says, ‘Great.’ He was a little nervous. It was actually really nice that he was nervous that day because it’s about him and he knows it. So we’re shooting this scene and I’m close to the camera and we just do some several takes and it was great. And then, occasionally, if I thought he was done with something, I could throw something at him.”
Well, DiCaprio was amazing in the scene! It was a fantastic performance and it was funny as hell.
