Mike Flanagan is developing a TV and film adaptation of Stephen King’s THE DARK TOWER!

Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures acquired the rights Stephen KingThe epic fantasy book series by The Black Tower, and are being developed for TV and film! Flanagan is the director behind projects like The Hill House haunt, The haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight snack, Gerald’s gameAnd Doctor Sleep. She wanted to give it a try The Black Tower It’s been his dream project for years, and now he’s actually going to make it happen, which is great!

Fans have been waiting for a proper adaptation of The Black Tower series, and I think Flanagan has what it takes to make it happen! He’s going to get it right and envision it as a five-season series that will be followed by two standalone films. This was similar to the plan I directed RonHoward when he was developing it all those years ago.

Speaking to Deadline, Flanagan revealed The Black Tower news and confirmed that it is a project he will develop for Amazon:

“You’re the first person we tell, but yeah. Prior to our Amazon deal, we acquired the rights to The Dark Tower, which if you know anything about me, you know has been my holy grail of a project for most of my life. We actually have those rights derived from our agreement with Amazon, which doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t at some point — you don’t know. But it’s something we’ve developed ourselves and we’re really excited to finally get back on our feet at some point.

When asked how far along he was in developing the project, he shared his progress and enthusiasm:

“I wrote a pilot, we see it as a series that will last at least five seasons. And having lived with this project for as long as I have, I have a huge amount of it processed in my brain. But I have a pilot script that I’m excited about and a very detailed outline for season 1 and a larger outline for subsequent seasons. I think eventually, if we’re able to make it work, there are other writers I want to get involved in that process that I’ve worked with before; I think they would be really fabulous for a really small, intimate writers room where we can keep breaking it up.

“I’ll tell you, more than half my life, I closed my eyes and was able to watch a lot of this game, I dreamed about it. That first shot that comes straight to the incredible first sentence of the first book, The Gunslinger, I’ve had that image buzzing in my head since I was a student. He’s got to get out of there eventually, I really need to get that out of my head.

“The pilot script is one of my favorite things I’ve ever gotten to work on. It was surreal to work on it. So we were blown away and grateful that Stephen King is entrusting us with such an undertaking, something so precious to him, and we hope to find the right partners to make it happen.”

Flanagan was also asked to speak to Stephen King about the adaptation and how he obtained the rights to the property and said:

“Absolutely. This happened because I sent him a very, very detailed outline of what I wanted to do with it. And it was in response to that that he gave us the rights. A project like this, I absolutely wouldn’t want to be involved with it. in a direction that would have been blasphemous for Stephen King material, but he’s been very, very supportive and very enthusiastic about what we’d like to do without.

He then explained his plans for the ambitious project:

Well, to be honest, the way I’ve seen it break out is five seasons of television, followed by two standalone features. But I think our priority was trying to get the TV side going first. We won’t put the cart too far ahead of the horse on such a challenging project, but I think it’s the perfect way to do it.

As you know, The Black Tower it’s considered one of the more difficult book series to adapt, and it’s something Flanagan is very aware of. But while it’s a tall order, he feels ready to tackle it and has prepared for it with previous projects that he has developed over the years. It looks ready and I’m ready to watch what it creates! I’m so excited about this one, and I’m confident he’ll deliver an adaptation that fans will love.
