We are about to get our second Avatars film over a decade after the premiere of the first. The first film was a record-breaking box office hit, but it’s yet to be seen whether fans will show up the same way for the next installment, titled Avatar: The Way of Water. If it’s all right, director James Cameron he has a third, fourth and fifth film ready in the next few years. If they’re not as well received as she hopes, she’s already made the third film, which will probably hit theaters, and we’ll have to see where that goes.
In case we see Cameron’s dream come true, we have some details on the fifth story to share with you. In a recent interview with io9, the producer of the film Jon Landau it has been asked whether the Earthlings who were defeated and left Pandora at the end of the original film will return to wage war on the Na’vi. He wouldn’t have said it, but he said it Avatars 5 will go to Earth.
“Well, that’s funny. I wasn’t going to talk about it, but I heard Jim talk about it a little later. In film five there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go there to open people’s eyes, to open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth.
The report went on to add that while it looks like a huge spoiler to reveal that Neytiri is still alive in the fifth and final chapter Avatars, Landau is smarter than that. He wouldn’t casually drop that information unless it was incredibly obvious or unimportant to the overall story.
Landau went on to explain why Neytiri will ultimately need to be briefed on what’s happening on Earth. It’s because he doesn’t understand that the Earth isn’t just full of evil people who want to loot Pandora.
“Earth is not only represented by the RDA [the evil organization in the film; the abbreviation stands for Resources Development Administration]. Just as you are defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good. And this is the case here on Earth. And we want to expose Neytiri to that.”
He went on to add:
“I think right now we want every movie to do exactly what the first movie did. We want [audiences] go, ‘Wow. Where else could they go? They just showed us all about Pandora.’ Then you say, ‘Good heavens. They are going to the oceans. Oh. The oceans are amazing.’ Okay, it’s over. Where can it go? Same thing from an emotional story. We end the [first] movies with Jake and this transformation. But we have suffered the loss of [Sigourney Weaver’s character] Grace, and we suffered other things. We want people to come out of this film with an emotional resolution that requires both a desire to return to those characters and the world.”
And while a few years ago several titles for the Avatars Sequels have reportedly leaked, which included the accurate title The water wayLandau says not to expect Avatars 5or any of the others, to align.
“We decided on titles, but I wouldn’t pick those other three titles that were out there. You know, if you roll the dice one time out of six, you’ll pick the right number.
It will be interesting to see how the future of the franchise plays out. Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters December 16. Are you excited about this?
