James Cameron definitely took his time. The ‘Titanic’ director, known for his perfectionism and ambition, does not approach any project lightly and the sequel to ‘Avatar’, the highest grossing film in history, would not be outdone. Thirteen years have passed and, after a long wait, we finally return to Pandora with ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’. In her we meet again with Jake Sully and Neytiri 15 years after the events of the first part, become parents of a large family.

Although the second film begins by contextualizing the story with a brief summary of what happened after the end of ‘Avatar’, the truth is that most of what happens in that time period is left out. At least for the viewer. Over the course of that decade and a half, much has changed for Jake and Neytiri, as they face new challenges to protect what they hold most dear. And for the actors who bring to life the lead couple, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, to prepare their characters in as much detail as possible, Cameron had a script set between the first and second installments. Just for them.
“Jim – I think I can tell – gave me a script that was ‘Avatar 1.5′”revealed the actor. “It was incredible, detailed and tells everything that happened during that time. I think Jim realized that story was about them being warriors and fighting clan battles, stuff like that. [Dirigiéndose a Cameron] And you wanted to explore what this family dynamic was like and the natural extension of the romance. It gave us a good starting point on how to fill in the missing gaps”. In the film, Jake and Neytiri are the parents of five children, three biological, Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), and two adopted, Kiri (human-Na’vi hybrid played by Sigourney Weaver) and the human Miles (Jack Champion).
Comic Interquel
Cameron is fully invested in Jake and Neytiri’s future, with ‘Avatar 3’ already finished and scheduled for late 2024, and ‘Avatar 4’ partially filmed. The future of the saga depends on the box office of the first two sequels, but on the famous director He’s already thinking about expanding the story to its sixth and seventh installments, and certainly beyond.
Therefore, there are currently no plans for a prequel (or interquel) that fills the gaps between the films, using the aforementioned ‘Avatar 1.5’ script. However, thanks to the comics we will be able to find out more about what happened up to ‘The sense of water’. Publisher Dark Horse, responsible for expanding “Avatar” in comic format with stories like “Tsu’tey’s Path” or “Adapt or Die”, has just released ‘The High Ground’, graphic novel in three volumes that connects directly to ‘The sense of water’ and it’s based on those outtakes Cameron wrote for Jake and Neytiri.
‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ is released exclusively in theaters on December 16th.
