The office was a hugely popular hit for NBC during its 2005-2013 run. And since it hit streams and syndication, it’s gained far more fans and continues to garner more. It’s a classic hilarious show that has as many awkward moments as it does heartwarming.
Actress and writer Mindy Kaling, who is best known for playing Kelly Kapoor on the series as well as writing many of the show’s episodes, was recently asked by Variety what he thought about the possibility that the show could get a reboot one day. She explained:
“That show is so inappropriate now. The writers that I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how much of that show we probably couldn’t do now. Tastes have changed and honestly what offends people has changed so much now. I think that’s actually one of the reasons the show is popular, because people feel like there’s something fearless or taboo that it talks about on the show.
When asked what her character would do, pop culture obsessed Kelly Kapoor, in a 2022 version of The officeKaling replied:
“I think she would have left Dunder Mifflin to become an influencer, and then probably would have been canceled, almost immediately. In reality, most of the characters from that show would have already been written off.
Many fans have responded to Kaling’s statements, saying the show has always been inappropriate! He was about a diverse group of people, many of whom were oblivious to political correctness or even social properties. He felt like he was watching real people, and that’s what made it fun. But as other stars of the series have said, it sure would be hard to recreate the magic of the original series.
Steve Carellwho has starred in most seasons of the ensemble series, has said over the years that he is unwilling to return for a reboot, previously telling Collider:
“The show is much more popular now than it was when it was on the air. I just can’t see it being the same thing, and I think most people wish it was the same thing, but it isn’t. In the end, I think maybe it’s better to let it be good enough and just let it exist for what it was.
“You would literally have to have all the same writers, same producers, same directors and same actors, and even with all those components, it wouldn’t be the same. Then no. But I love the show. It was the most emotional moment and all those people are my friends. We all love it. It was a special thing. It was a special thing before people thought it was a special thing. It was special to us, before other people started feeling that way. Hand.”
I definitely understand where Carell is coming from. The office it’s one of my favorite shows of all time and I would be really excited about some sort of reunion, but I know it would be a tricky undertaking and it would be sad if it didn’t come together right.
All episodes of The Office are currently available to stream on Peacock. Below you will find some funny fan posts in response to Kaling’s comments.

I hate this mentality so much. It implies that all of the inappropriate moments of anger were actually appropriate at the time of the show’s release. Even then it was inappropriate. That was the whole basis for the humor in the early seasons. https://t.co/HYG50dw2DN

The Office, which airs in syndication on two different television networks and was bought to stream by NBC for $500 million, is not suited to this current environment. Safe. https://t.co/rTho5He4Q5
