When it comes to horror, many of the genre’s fans are tasked with delving into the depths of each year, trying to salvage those jewels that upon release didn’t get the love and reception they deserved. That’s why, several years after the release of these horror films, their box office failure does not reflect what they have become today.
There is no doubt that Sam Raimi’s installments will always remain a classic of the genre, but it is also true that the 2013 remake of “Evil Dead” is one of many horror movies that flopped upon release, but that the years have proved him right. Directed by Fede Álvarez, this retelling of the story of a group of friends who unleash a curse on a cabin is the same, or even more brutal and bloody than the original. Available on YouTube and Apple TV.
Malicious
Even though it’s only been a year since it hit theaters, ‘Malicious’ It’s an underrated horror film upon its release. Directed by James Wan, the same responsible for “The Conjuring” or “The Night of the Demon”, the story of this woman who has terrifying visions that gradually come true, is an almost gory festival for horror lovers from the 70s and 80s. The Ritual
A small production in which Netflix had a hand and which, unfortunately, was a failure that scared the platform away from focusing less on this type of title. Even so, the years have lived up to the legacy of “The Ritual,” a horror film by David Bruckner, released in 2017, which follows a group of friends who go on a journey in homage to a companion, but deep inside the forest discover something truly terrifying.
Apostle
Perhaps one of the most accessible on the list, just because it’s on Netflix, is “Apostle,” a foreign film by Garet Evans, starring Dans Stevens, Lucy Boyton, Kristine Froseth, and more. The story follows a man who travels to a remote island in search of his missing sister, who has been kidnapped by a religious cult, and must rescue her.
Ouja
Perhaps it’s one of the more controversial ones on the list, since it could only be a horror film that scores a lot of points if you watch it at the right time. This is ‘Ouija’, a 2016 film by Mike Flanagan, starring Lulu Wilson and Elizabeth Reaser, about a girl who tries to contact her dead father through the Ouija board, but summons a demon instead. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
