Before there was Mickey, there was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. This relic from the early days of Disney animation may not have been in animation for nearly 95 years, but he’s certainly still a much-loved character. Oswald was supposed to get his series streaming on Disney+, the designs, scripts, and animation tests were done with a pilot in production before everything shut down.
But now, as part of Disney’s 100 Year Wonderland celebrations, Oswald has returned to animation. The official Disney Animation Twitter account shared that “Walt Disney’s Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is back! For the first time in nearly 95 years, Oswald stars in an all-new hand-drawn short film from Walt Disney Animation Studios to celebrate 100 years of Disney wonder! #Disney100” along with a new short film starring the rabbit. It’s definitely an homage to the early days of Disney animation with the fun piano music and the Looney Tunesphysics-esque.
I hope this will help Oswald get more screen time, I think some sort of movie with him and Mickey would be quite fun. Or maybe we could resurrect that streaming series that died. How Matthew Danner, whose team was behind the streaming series, said, “Oswald has a LOT of love for Disney. I just wanted to share how serious that love is. I’m sure there will be an Oswald project coming up in the near future.” Can’t wait to see Oswald again?
