What exactly is the fate dial in INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF FATE?

The first trailer of Indian Jones and Dial of Fate came out recently and one of the first questions that popped into my mind was, “What is the doom dial!?” So, I started doing some research on real ancient artifacts which could be these.

Every Indiana Jones adventure has dealt with a myth or real-world artifact, so what could this be? After doing some research, I think the Fate Dial most likely refers to the Greek myth of the Rota Fortunae, which is better known as the Wheel of Fortune.

The Wheel of Fortune is more of a pop culture reference now, but that original ancient artifact is said to have the power to change destinies, one spin of the wheel can change the positions of those on the wheel: some suffer great misfortune, others earn windfall gains.

The wheel is connected to Greek mythology and in the trailer we see features of Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and her goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) explore an ancient temple with Greek writing and images. They also come across a statue in the trailer, which could very well be the goddess Tyche or Fortuna, who are the goddesses that the wheel belongs to, the goddess of fortune and destiny.

We also learned that the story’s villain, Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), is a “man who would like to right some of the wrongs of the past. There is something that could make the world a much better place to live. He’d like to get his hands on it. Even Indiana Jones wants to get his hands on it.

It seems that this Wheel of Fortune, also known as Dial of Destiny, can do just that. I don’t know for sure if the initial of Destiny is inspired by the Wheel of Fortune, but it seems apt and makes sense. We’ll just have to wait and see! What are some of your theories about what the Dial of Destiny could be?

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was directed by James Mangold and has a release date of June 30, 2023. You can watch the trailer for the film here!
