Sony Pictures Classic has released a beautiful trailer of Bill Nighythe upcoming movie Life. I had the opportunity to see this film at Sundance earlier this year and it told a wonderful and moving story.
The film is a retelling of Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 film, Ikiru. Life is set in 1953, at a time when London is still recovering from World War II. In the story, Williams (Nighy), “a veteran civil servant and bureaucratic cog in Britain’s post-WWII rebuilding, deftly does paperwork in a government office only to come to terms with his existence when he is diagnosed with a deadly disease. A widower, she hides his condition from her adult son, spends an evening of debauchery with a bohemian writer in Brighton, and uncharacteristically avoids his office. But after a spirited ex-colleague, Margaret, inspires him to find meaning in his final days, Williams attempts to save a modest housing project from bureaucratic purgatory.
Nighy delivers a strong performance in the film and as I said in my review, “he has to carry the whole film on his shoulders and he does it with grace. The character that he plays is such a boring and uninteresting individual, but Nighy’s performance manages to keep you involved in the journey of the character.”
Life is directed by Olivier Hermanus (Shirley Adams, Beauty, The Endless River, And Moffies) from a script written by Kazuo Ishiguro. The film is also the protagonist Alex Sharp, Adrian Rawlins, Hubert Burton, Oliver Chris, Michael CochraneAnd Aimee Lou Wood .
Life will be released in select theaters on December 23, 2022. This is a great inspiring film that may inspire you to look at life differently.
