The Shawshank Redemption It’s one of those movies that you can’t resist if you see it on TV, and it always ranks in fan favorite movie lists. It is based on a beautiful short story written by Stephen Kingand adapted and directed by Franco Darabont. It has a long running time of 2 hours and 22 minutes, but it tells an amazing story.
In a recent interview with /Film, celebrating the 15th anniversary of Darabont’s sci-fi horror thriller, The hazeDarabont recalled the test screenings he did for The Shawshank Redemption prior to its 1994 release, and described the one scene he opted to cut from the end of the film:
“[W]ego […] in the market, where we see [Red] bagging, and asks permission to go to the bathroom. [A]And there’s this sequence where everything closes in on him, and he has a panic attack, and he runs down the back of the store and into the men’s room and goes into one of the cubicles, closes the door only to hear the walls around to him. It’s interesting stuff.
[W]We were just testing the audience’s patience, waiting [Red to get to the tree], with something they already knew. There was no new information. There were new scenes, but no new information. Oh man, we couldn’t get back to editing fast enough. It was like pulling a thorn out of our butt, losing that five minute movie, and then the movie just came out of there beautifully.”
Luckily, Darabont was able to look at the film from the eye of a masterful editor and we were able to enjoy the final product. I love watching extra scenes from movies I love, because I like to see more from the characters and the story, but you can usually tell why they didn’t make it to the final cut.
