On Friday November 25, ‘Mundo Extraño’ is released in Spain, the new Disney animated film that presents us with an adventure of the Clade family in an unknown land that will subject them to different challenges and dangerous creatures. Unfortunately, some of these dangerous creatures exist in our world, as in the case of One Million Moms (WHO), an association that defends fundamentalist Christian values and is dedicated to fighting what its group calls negative influences on the entertainment. A member of the Clade family is a gay teenager named Ethan and, as happened with ‘Lightyear’, the presence of an LGTBQ+ character is causing a lot of talk to certain homophobic groups who do not contemplate a sexuality beyond heterosexuality.

For One Million Moms, a project of the anti-LGBTQ+ group American Family Association, one of these negative influences is linked to the collective. That’s why Ethan Clade’s presence in “Strange World” is a problem for them and the way to express their hatred and discontent was to mobilize people to boycott Disney. Therefore, they shared an open petition for signatures: “We do not agree with the LGBTQ agenda you are pushing families with in the upcoming animated film ‘Weirdworld’. Our families and we will not be seeing this film. Disney has left conservative and Christian families no choice but to avoid ‘Weird World’ as it goes against our beliefs and values. Our family will not support Disney. It has lost our trust.” The group claims to have 16,000 signatures.
About a scene that was shown at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in which Ethan is in love with another boy, One Million Moms described it this way: “Obviously, this part of the film is a move toward inclusion coupled with a blatant attempt by Disney to normalize same-sex infatuation.” But this organization’s problem isn’t just “Strange World,” it’s with Disney in general, as they explain on their website: “Disney is no longer understated, they have now traded subtlety for intentionality. Disney’s parents knew they were gone as children. Disney has now decided to be politically correct instead of offering women-friendly programming. families. Disney should only entertain, not push an agenda.”
One Million Moms isn’t the only organization that has expressed its homophobia in the wake of the ‘Strange World’ gay character. The editor of The Daily Wire, a conservative American digital outlet, Ben Shapiro wrote the following last week: “As Disney begins touting ‘Weird World’ for next week’s release, here’s the reminder that their ‘not-so-secret gay program’ targeting children is underway. was with ‘Lightyear. ‘ Your children, your choice.” Christian Rufo, a conservative activist, also called for a boycott of Disney in April when a video leaked of a conference where Disney executives championed the idea of introducing LGBTQ+ characters in their films.
The truth behind the noise
Fortunately, these groups are not the vast majority. The reality behind all the noise these types of people make is that “Strange world” is receiving high ratings from critics. After 40 shared reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Strange World’ has a decent 73% positive ratings. Most of them agree that it’s an easy movie to enjoy thanks to a fun sci-fi adventure, that the animation is very visually appealing, and that the dynamic of the Clade family is very good, with a great message behind it. ‘Strange World’, a film directed by Don Hall (‘Raya and the Last Dragon’, ‘Moana’) and Qui Nguyen (‘She Kills Monsters’), will be released in Spanish cinemas on November 25th.
