NEW GODS co-writer Tom King talks about what the film could have been like

New Gods is a comic created by Jack Kirby that was all slated to be adapted into a movie for DC a few years ago, but has since gotten the axe. Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay he was to direct the film, with the comic book writer Tom King adapting the script, and DuVernay commissioned King to bring in a whole team of Jack Kirby experts to advise on the film. It seems like it would have been a solid film, but sadly it fell by the wayside.

Now Tom King is opening up about the story that could have been and what it was like working on it with DuVernay. In a recent interview with CBR, King was asked if there’s even a shred of hope that the project could still come to fruition. He replied:

“Ah, I mean, anything is possible. I love that script. I loved working with Ava. She was an absolute joy. She’s a brilliant storyteller. so incredibly busy. I have so many things to do. It would be hard to see an entire movie right now. But that script was never read. The film was taken off the record because it conflicted with the plans they had at the time. So who knows? When new plans arrive, maybe new opportunities will present themselves. This is complete speculation. I have absolutely no knowledge of it. I would love to work with Ava again. It’s been a joy.”

The story is a science fiction based mythology revolving around ancient deities known as the New Gods. “Resembling the gods of Earth lore, the New Gods were larger than life, possessing fantastic powers, which they used in an endless struggle between good and evil.” This film would tell the story of the inhabitants of New Genesis and Apokolips, twin planets engaged in an epic cosmic war. Characters featured in the project were believed to include Darkseid, Big Barda, and Mister Miracle.
