In a busy week on Broadway, there were three official openings (including the get me out return) and three new additions to the preview production lineup, with revenues for the 34-show slate up 8% from the previous week (to $32,314,920).
Attendance for the week ending November 13 increased by 11% to 272,232.
Starting with the openings, all of which were critically well received: Kimberly Akimbo the booth took in $491,165 and occupied 94% of the seats; Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man and the Pool played at Vivian Beaumont, the non-professional Lincoln Center, with a 92% load and grossed $290,305 for seven performances; and get me out took $457,404, which is 56% of the seats in Schoenfeld. (Note: opening weeks include press and other compositions).
Three productions that opened with previews were new to the selection:
- A Christmas song, starring Jefferson Mays, began previews at the Hollander ahead of its Nov. 21 opening, as did All Characters , and grossed $165,804 for seven shows, with an attendance rate of 93%. Look for receipts to grow with the holiday season;
- is not a mother began showing previews at the Belasco (premiered Dec. 1) and grossed $87,354 for five performances, with a 64% seat rate;
- Murders in the State of OhioThe Adrienne Kennedy play, starring Audra McDonald, opened at the rebranded James Earl Jones Theater (opening December 8) earning $145,011 in its first three performances and a 58% seat rate had.
Some notable artists from the past week:
- Tom Stoppards Leopoldville continued his strong run for his best week ever at the Longacre, with $1,176,995 for the fifth straight week over $1 million;
- MJ broke another house record at Neil Simon, earning $1,815,353;
- Almost knowndespite mixed reviews, Jacobs seemed to take off, earning $815,750 with 83% of the seats taken;
- Some love it when it’s hot filled 92% of Shubert preview seats with a modest average ticket price of $66.90, grossing $622,409.
Some productions have been cancelled A strange loop Missed a performance due to non-Covid illness and earned $514,415, 85% of Lyceum capacity; KPOP missed two shows and grossed $134,348 at Circle in the Square with an average ticket price of $37; and Funny girl slipped slightly (to a still-strong $1,640,222) when Lea Michele missed an appearance (due to a back injury). The musical revival, in which Julie Benko filled in for this performance, remained at 97% capacity in August Wilson.
Also of interest The lion king $223,347 down to $1,537,809, but only because the Sunday performance of the all-musical was paid for and donated to the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly the Actors Fund) to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the production.
In the season to date, Broadway has grossed $702,099,259 with a total admission of 5,548,683 at an approximately 87% seat load rate.
