Searchlight Pictures has released a new director’s trailer Sam Mendes'(american beauty, Revolutionary road, Sky fall, 1917) upcoming movie Empire of Light. The film is set in an English seaside town in the early 1980s and tells a powerful and touching story about human connection and the magic of cinema.
This is a beautifully crafted film that explores some heavy dramatic themes, one of which is mental illness. It also serves as a love letter to the magic of cinema and how movies can inspire us and help us find connections. I’ve had the opportunity to see it before, and it’s the kind of movie that cinephiles will love.
Speaking of his inspiration for the film, Mendes said, “For me, that was the late 70s and early 80s: the music, the movies, the pop culture of that period generally shaped what It was a time of great political upheaval in the UK, with a great deal of very inflammatory racial politics – but at the same time, an amazing time for music and for culture in general – very creative, very politicised, very energetic “.
The movie has a wonderful cast which includes Olivia Colmannwhich will be nominated for all awards for best actress, Michele Ward, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Tom Brooke, Tanya mood, Hanna OnslowAnd Crystal Clark. The music for the film was also created by Trent Reznor And Ross penthouse. Here is the synopsis:
The Empire is the kind of cinema you don’t see often, framed by bright lights and a beautiful marquee, graciously inviting everyone into its red velvet seats. Hilary (Olivia Colman) serves at the front of the house, opening the theater each morning and overseeing a brimming stall. Meanwhile, her manager (Colin Firth) occasionally calls her into her office for illicit favors. It’s a grim routine that Hilary reluctantly repeats, but all of her colleagues acknowledge that she’s been much quieter since she returned to work after a long absence. When Stephen (Micheal Ward) arrives as an enthusiastic new employee, the two form a quick, if outwardly unlikely, connection. Hilary hides a troubled past, struggling to manage her mental health, while Stephen, a young black man, grapples with rampant racism in 1980s Britain. Both wounded by assaults beyond their control, they find an escape and a safe haven in each other, but their relationship, like the Empire cinema itself, cannot last forever, and soon the couple must face the reality of their different futures.
Searchlight Pictures will release the film in US theaters on December 9, 2022. Watch the trailer and let us know if you are eager to watch this film.
