Lupita Nyong’o realized her dream through filming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever when she spoke Spanish. The winner of the Oscar for 12 years slave was born in México City to Kenyan parents.
“I was so looking forward to it,” she said at a panel for Entertainment Weekly. “It was just a pure gift. And I was very, very happy about it… I always wanted to work in Spanish and never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that this opportunity would arise Black Panther.”
Nyong’o said that the Marvel film “represents different sides of my heritage,” adding, “Being born in Mexico and representing Mesoamerican culture is very close to my heart.”
That Black Panther The sequel introduces Namor, a villain played by Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, who rules Talokan, an underwater civilization based on Aztec legends. This conspiracy enabled Nyong’os Nakia to speak Spanish and other indigenous languages. For Nyong’o, being able to speak different languages is something she thinks is “really cool”.
“I always thought it was cool that she spoke Korean since the last movie, and I always thought you never saw that,” Nyong’o said.
Wakanda forever was a blockbuster, earning $180 million in its first weekend in the United States. The Marvel film opened higher than its original estimate of $175 million domestically. Worldwide, the Disney-backed film earned $330 million in its opening weekend, with $150 million at the international box office.
