Proposal for a DC Noir film with Question, Huntress, Black Canary and Green Arrow

The DCEU, for lack of a better term, was a disaster. With some blockbuster movies really pulling their weight and others packing the punch, the DC movies have really been a mixed bag. Add to that the deletion of similar movies Bad girl and the Zatana movie, and up to this point, it was underwhelming for me. I’m ready for something new and different with my superhero movies.

I’m sick to death of origin stories, of heroes you love to see getting their ass kicked instead grappling with learning about their powers and the moral dilemmas of when to use them. Let’s move away from dark, gritty reboots and over-the-top CGI. I humbly present to you the film you didn’t even know you needed: a film noir starring Question, Huntress, Black Canary and Green Arrow.

The story of this movie would be based on the Justice League Unlimited episode “Double Date” in season 2, the entire episode could be expanded into a phenomenal movie. The huntress asks Question for help in tracking down Mandragora, the man who killed her parents. In return, she promises to tell him about a connection between Lex Luthor and Cadmus, something she’s been looking for for a long time.

The Justice League expels Huntress from the league for her insistence on pursuing her revenge killing and sends Black Canary and Green Arrow’s guard Mandragora who is in federal custody. Eventually, they all work together to bring Mandragora to justice and finally the Slayer spares him when she sees that he has a son. A romance is bubbling between Question and Huntress and culminates when it is revealed that Question knew that Huntress had no information for him and helped her because he likes her.

This whole plot would make an excellent film noir plot. Huntress is the attractive protagonist who walks into Question’s office and needs something from him, but there’s obviously a more nefarious purpose to her request. The Question itself essentially lives the lifestyle of a noir detective and would make a great leading man.

Black Canary and Green Arrow are excellent at both being a barrier and providing last-minute help when the situation turns dire. Each character is confident and, above all, competent. This wouldn’t require any kind of origin story for anyone, no one would have to learn to control their powers or deal with their lack of abilities. This would be a true crime film with some of the brightest minds and deadliest fighters competing against each other. And of course jokes. Because what film like this wouldn’t be complete without the two leads building up a flirtatious repertoire with each other.

This movie would also stand out in a sea of superhero movies. Let’s face it, even with Marvel’s introduction of the Multiverse, the big blockbuster superhero movies all felt the same for a while, right? This would be a style that hasn’t been used for superhero movies in a while and would be a refreshing change of pace. It shouldn’t necessarily be dark and gritty in an attempt to stand out. Sure there are some themes that can be heavy, mainly the nasty revenge cycle, but you can easily balance that with the Question and its uncanny ability to make connections that seem crazy but are true in the world.

The thing that should be done though would be more of a reliance on practical effects. Superhero movies have been so reliant on special effects that it would be great not to have to depend on them to tell the story. I realize that in some cases it’s unavoidable, but I think there would be something special about cutting them since we’re basing the style on an older cinematic style.

What do you think, would you watch this movie? Why have I wanted this movie ever since I saw the Justice League Unlimited episode. What other kinds of movies would you like to see from DC? I think it’s about time we broke the mold of superhero movies and tried new things rather than just introducing new characters.
