The documentation Deconstruct Karen dropped his first trailer.
Directed by Patty Ivins Specht and based on the Race2Dinner concept by Saira Rao and Regina Jackson, Deconstruct Karen sees several women in a heated conversation about race, gender and white supremacy in the US.
Race2Dinner was created out of a need to teach. The experience requires women to engage in direct and difficult conversations, often over dinner. It’s about promoting open dialogue and exposing truths about racism.
In a joint statement, Jackson and Rao said: “Deconstructing Karen is an invitation to unlearn one’s racism. We specifically chose to release this film during the holiday season, when people come together – in anticipation , fear and preparation for the racism that will be served on every Christmas table around the world We invite everyone – especially white women – to sit with friends and family, prepare to be uncomfortable and be open to the power to open up to how white women defend racism every day.”
Jackson continues, “What we do know is that the pecking order throughout the white world and colonized countries is that the closer your skin color is to white, the more you will be accepted, valued and given opportunities in society. We live in a world of white supremacy and colorism. While Blacks and Indigenous people know this, so does everyone else. Many white people will deny this reality, but just ask the nice white people if they would willingly trade places with a black man in this society, and the visceral answer will be your answer.
Woodpecker is also executive producer of the film and Rit Saraswat is co-executive producer. Mikell Ivey, Jessica McWilliams, Dawn Stroupe and Rob VanAlkemade serve as producers, with Katherine Montgomery serving as co-producer.
Deconstruct Karen will be available on VOD on November 24th.
