Netflix has released a new trailer for Guillermo del ToroThe stop-motion animated film adaptation of the classic Carlo Collodi history Pinocchio. I love the art style and the gorgeous graphics, but it also seems to tell such a beautiful story. This movie looks a lot better than what Disney is doing; this actually does something different and unique with this classic fairytale and I can’t wait to watch it!
The film is a musical adventure that follows the extraordinary journey of a wooden boy magically brought to life by the desire of a father. The story is set in the 1930s during the rise of fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, that of del Toro Pinocchio is a story of love and disobedience like Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father’s expectations.
Del Toro teamed up with the Jim Henson Company and ShadowMachine to bring this film to life. The voice cast includes Ewan McGregor how Sebastian J. Grillo, Gregorio Mann like Pinocchio, David Bradley (Harry Potter, game of Thrones) like Geppetto, Tilda Swinton (Strange Doctor), Cristoph Waltz (Alita: Angel of battle), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger things), Cate Blanchett (Thor: Raganrok), Giovanni Turturro (The Batman), Ron Perlman (Hell boy), Tim Blake Nelson (Guardians), And Burn Gorman (Enola Holmes).
Del Toro directed the film together Marco Gustavo (Great Mr. Fox) and wrote it together with Patrick McHale. The lyrics of the songs come from del Toro and Katz, with music by Alexandre Desplat who will also write the score. Artist Gris Grimly created the original design for the character of Pinocchio in the film and the puppets were built by Mackinnon and Saunders (The Corpse Bride).
The director previously shared that this version of Pinocchio is not a family-friendly version of the story. The director also discussed his own Pinocchio film, compared to Frankensteinand described it as a “brutalist tale”.
“For me, Pinocchio, very much like Frankenstein, is a blank canvas in which learning the curve of what the world is and what the human being is is very interesting to do as a story. I am very attracted to it because, thematically – and I don’t want to spoil the subject of the film – it is something that is in all my films, which is choice. It is a theme that is very close to my heart. I think [earlier versions of] history, and Collodi’s in particular, are very repressive. It is essentially a very brutalist tale about what sinful disobedience is. And I think disobedience is the beginning of the will and the beginning of the choice. … I think there is something very attractive about seeing disobedience as a virtue, or as the beginning of a virtue.
He also described the character of Pinocchio, saying, “He is a creature created by unnatural means by a father who then pushes away [himself] from, and must learn about failure, pain and loneliness ”.
Speaking earlier about the film, Perlman said: “The presumption of the film is that Pinocchio is the perfect soldier because he is not human. So he never questions orders. He has no fears. He is invulnerable. “
The film will be released in select theaters in November and on Netflix on December 9th. Enjoy the new trailer!
