The two are thrilled to work with their friends and industry colleagues under their AGBO production brand and are open to seeing how the storytelling changes in the future. They were outspoken about their beliefs that cinema was dying out during their press tour The gray man, saying they see cinemas as outdated and increasingly irrelevant. When reprimanded for their comments, they expressed that they wished it wasn’t, but they simply didn’t believe cinemas had the stake to support arthouse films as they have in the past.

In a recent interview with Variety, Joe Russo explained that, working with Disney, they talked extensively about the evolution of the film, saying:

“I recently had conversations with the folks at Disney: They have the same philosophy, that we are headed for the digital future that allows them to access their audience anywhere, anytime with any of their assets. Like it or not, the advent of AI, the advent of three-dimensional projectors that don’t require glasses, the advent of deepfakes – everything that’s coming will change the face of media as we know it. And we are interested in turning the car in this direction “.

He went on to talk about a possible future, which sounds crazy, but rather interesting!

“Cinema will transform into another medium,” says Joe, becoming more animated as we delve into this topic. “I don’t know what those media will be. My guess is that when you can sit in your house, turn to one of the actors who is standing in front of you and say, ‘Hey, Tom Cruise, wait a second. Tell me how you shot this scene ‘and Tom Cruise, equipped with artificial intelligence, can turn to you and start explaining, at which point it’s over, right? It is then that technology will dominate any new form of storytelling that is coming ”.

Regardless of whether or not a Tom Cruise bot is on the horizon, the point for the Russos is not so much predicting the future as preparing for it. Joe explained:

“We could develop something for two years, and then the market changes or some new medium comes up that is more suitable for this story. We spend another six months converting it to that model. We take this function and turn it into a series of events. Or let’s take this idea and sell it to a gaming company. It allows us to survive as creatives no matter what happens in the world.

As the market continues to change, it’s important for artists to be agnostic to keep telling stories. Don’t let a very outspoken minority tell you what kind of stories you can tell. Because you can be successful by telling all the stories you want ”.

I think they have the right attitude and keeping an open mind about where the narrative is headed will keep them relevant and participate in making the movies and shows we want to see.
