Andy Serkis made his comeback in Star Wars universe in the new Lucasfilm series Andor, but this time he plays a completely different character. The actor did his Star Wars debut as the villain Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The character was killed Star Wars: The Last Jedibut there was always a chance that Serkis could return to the franchise as a different character because Snoke was a CGI creation.
Serkis’s new character is called Kino Loy, an inmate on Narkina 5 who oversaw the work of other prisoners in Unit Five-Two-D as their manager. This character is much more interesting than Snoke! Oh, what a difference good writing makes.
The two characters are so clearly different from each other, but in an interview with the actor he was asked by / Film how playing Kino is comparable to playing Snoke, and this was his answer:
“Well, you can’t really compare them, in a way. They are so completely different. I loved playing Snoke. Snoke was a great character to play. I never thought I’d go back to the universe to play another character, but when Tony Gilroy walked up to me and said, “Listen, are you coming to play Kino Loy?” I was like, ‘Will it be confusing for everyone?’ There are so many Snoke’s theories flying around, is this really just adding fuel to the fire? I didn’t really want to go down that road. But I was really a huge fan of Thief Oneand Tony’s description of the character of Kino Loy, it was so endearing in a way, because here was this man who really cares about the greater good, who is now incarcerated and loses touch with himself and gets very cold and just wants to survive and take care of number one.
“Therefore [he] returns to the reverse journey when he comes into contact with Cassian Andor and finds his common humanity. I think that trip is really interesting. The world of Thief One, it feels so gritty, real, human and complex. Unlike the world that Snoke lives in, which is primarily about dark and light, this is much more about the gray areas of the Star Wars universe.”
I honestly never would have linked this new Kino character to Snoke. I don’t think it would ever be a big deal. I really like the character of Serkis in Andor and the way his story arc unfolds is wonderful and intriguing. I can’t wait to see how this character’s story arc continues to develop.
Andor it was a great TV show! Tony Gilroythe writing is so beautiful! This is easily one of the best Star Wars projects that we have been seeing for years and I hope we will see more Star Wars projects that are so beautiful!
