I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to understand how the story for a Black Panther followed later Chadwick Boseman deceased. You know that director for sure Ryan Coogler and the rest of the creative team felt a lot of pressure. But even before that, the pressure was high because the first film was a huge success, grossing over a billion dollars at the box office!
During a recent interview with io9, Coogler talked about the pressure of doing Black Panther: Wakanda forever, as well as the possibility of a third film. He shared:
“When we were in Atlanta to make the first movie in 2017, we were in our own little bubble. So all the pressure felt like it was with us. And as we got closer to release, the anticipation and dimension of people’s expectations started to become more present to the point that we became aware of it. But for a long time it was our little secret. The details, the tribes, what was going to happen, what the characters looked like, what they were going to do. That was all we were interested in. “
“[There] it was a lot of pressure, but not like once you released a movie and you should follow it. And what my co-writer Joe Robert Cole and Nate [Moore, producer] and I wanted to – and we would talk to Chadwick [Boseman] even on that in preparation for the second – we wanted to make sure we keep the qualities that made the first film unique, but also broaden the world, open it up and really offer something beautiful to the audience. So this was our intention. “
Nate Moorehe went on to share his thoughts on the incredible pressure saying:
“You definitely feel the pressure, just because the response from the audience has been so powerful. to make sure returning to Wakanda was as engaging as it was the first time. [But]… to have a theatrical hit like that A) Surprised us and B) Oh man, how do we get over it? “
As for a possible third Black Panther film, Moore would obviously be happy to see Coogler return to direct it. This is something Marvel has already begun to discuss. When asked about this he said:
“This is the million dollar question. Listen, you never want to count your chickens before they hatch and the movie isn’t out yet. Right now it’s like, let’s see how people react to this film. But the hope is that the public is demanding that we do another one and surely there have been ideas thrown around. So we’ll see. “
Coogler isn’t really sure about returning for a third film, though, saying:
“I haven’t thought about it, to tell the truth. When it comes to writing and directing, I’m not the greatest multitasker in the world. I have to do what I have in front of me and be unique. When it comes to producing, I am better prepared to be able to do more things. And to plan things out, I have a great production company and great collaborators who can help get things going. But when it comes to writing, and in this case, co-writing and directing, I have to finish what’s in front of me and then think about everything that’s going on next. “
If Marvel ends up making a third Black Panther movie, it’s hard to think Coogler won’t be back. This is his corner of the MCU that played a big part in the construction! I think it makes sense for him to see it through and make at least one more movie.
In the upcoming film, Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M’Baku, Okoye and Dora Milaje fight to protect their nation from world powers intervening in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. When Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation, warns them of a global threat and his disturbing plan to counter it, the Wakandas unite with the help of War Dog Nakia and Everett Ross and forge a new path to the kingdom of Wakanda.
Black Panther: Wakanda forever is directed by Ryan Cooglerand the film will bring you back Danai Gurira, Letizia Wright, Daniel Kaluya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba, Angela BassettAnd Martin Freeman.
