Holy cow! This is beautiful! Years and years ago Liam Butler’s father wrote a letter to JRR Tolkienhe is son Christopher Tolkien and asked if they would release a new edition of the fantasy epic The Hobbit written entirely in the dwarven runes of Erebor.
It never received a reply and an official translation was never released in the fictional language. So, Liam took up the challenge and translated the entire novel into Erebor’s dwarven runes! Seriously! This is crazy, and I love it! He said:
I’ve been sitting in this for a while, but here it is. When my father was young he wrote a letter to Christopher Tolkien, asking if it was possible for The Hobbit to be published in Erebor Runes. Of course he never got an answer, because he would be stupid enough to sit there translating an entire book into an imaginary alphabet. I was. I sat at my desk for 8 hours every day for 4 months. Handwriting the entire The Hobbit in the runes of Erebor for his Christmas present. It is full of mistakes and errors but it remains one of the things I am most proud of.
What an amazing Christmas present! It will put all our Christmas gifts to our parents to shame.
