While Netflix hasn’t promoted the premiere of “The Sandman”, compared to “Stranger Things” and other releases, Neil Gaiman’s fantasy series was one of the most successful this year on the platform. However, the second season is still in limbo from which there seems to be no news for a long time. Now, fans have created a campaign for the company to renew its second season.
Through social networks, fans created the #RenewSandman campaign, where they ask Netflix to renew “The Sandman” and, at the same time, show their support for Neil Gaiman to ensure that the fantasy series starring Tom Sturridge has a new opportunity. The rumors of the last few months ensure that the pre-production has started, however there are no updates in this regard.
For its part, Netflix hasn’t renewed ‘The man of sand’, and it is not even known if they will give the green light to the production, despite having remained in the Top 10 of the most followed of the company in more than 80 countries, for almost 4 weeks in a row. It is worth mentioning that the streaming platform does not usually announce new seasons and renewals so soon, however, with the Neil Gaiman series, coming out in August, two months and the Tudum event have already passed, and there are no signs of renewal. . .
On the other hand, “Bridgerton” and “Heartstopper” received their sequels almost immediately, therefore, fans of ‘The man of sand’ ask Netflix to provide updates shortly on the state of the series, or if, on the contrary, it will be canceled like many others after its first episode. Neil Gaimam made it clear that, in any case, he could take his program to another platform.
Why doesn’t Netflix renew “The Sandman”?
The truth is that, as Neil Gaiman mentions, the renewal of ‘The Sandman’ does not happen because Netflix did not find the hit series, but, in fact, the statistics of the company to know which projects to support and which not, is based on “binge-watching”, or a marathon in which users enjoy the content without stopping until the end.
That said, “The Sandman” was a success that was partially enjoyed, meaning many people have finished the Morpheus series, however, they haven’t done so continuously and this, for Netflix, is not a profitable business model. So while it hasn’t been canceled yet, it also makes it harder for the company to think twice about spending money on such a large production.
But in the face of all the uncertainty, Neil Gaiman made some statements: “[The] Sandman is a very expensive series. And for Netflix to agree to fund, we need to have a great performance on the platform. So even though we’ve been in the world’s Top 10 for the past few weeks, that may not be enough. ”Fan hope is still there, and at worst, the story would only continue on HBO, Apple or maybe Amazon Prime Video.
