New arrival is a new game seeking funding on Kickstarter. The game is a story-based role-playing game for language learning set in a fantasy world where you learn a second language to communicate and survive. There are no lessons, no timers or commercials, just you explore the sandbox world and talk to people, form relationships and wield magic in the language you are learning.
You can choose to learn English, Spanish, French or Italian as you explore 8 unique cities and fish, craft, mine, perform alchemy, explore and search. There are 4 difficulty levels: absolute beginner, beginner, expert or intermediate beginner. There are tons of features for this game, including hovering over a word for a translation, constructing a sentence, conversation goals to build relationships, using language to cast spells, a dictionary to fill, grammar guides, translatable lore tales and learning statistics.
While I think the graphics leave something to be desired, I think this game is fantastic. I’ve always struggled to learn a second language using apps like Duolingo, but it seems like it would be a lot more fun and motivating to play. It also seems that there are many different options and ways to immerse yourself in the language while playing. Check out Kickstarter now.
