Netflix has released the first teaser trailer of its upcoming mystery horror thriller The pale blue eye. The film was directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy heart, antlers), and is the protagonist Christian Bale And Harry Melling (Harry Potter, The Queens Gambit) as Edgar Allan Poe.
I love the dark tone of this movie, and even though this teaser doesn’t show much, so far I like what I see. The film is based on Louis Bayardis the 2006 novel of the same name, and it’s a gothic thriller that the director has been trying to make for more than a decade.
The story centers on a young cadet the world would have known as Edgar Allan Poe and a series of murders that occurred at the United States Military Academy, West Point, in 1830. Bale plays retired detective Augustus Landor, in charge of investigate those murders. The synopsis reads:
West Point, 1830. In the early hours of a gray winter morning, a cadet is found dead. But after the body arrives at the morgue, the tragedy becomes ferocious when it is discovered that the young man’s heart has been cleverly removed. Fearing irreparable damage to the fledgling military academy, its leaders turn to a local detective, Augustus Landor (Bale), to solve the murder. Hindered by the cadets’ code of silence, Landor enlisted the help of one of them to carry the case forward, an eccentric cadet with a contempt for the rigors of the army and a penchant for poetry, a young man named Edgar Allan Poe.
The film is also the protagonist Gillian Anderson (The crown), Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Antichrist), Toby Jones (First cow), Harry Lawtey (Industry), Simon McBurney (Row of Carnival), Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner), Hadley Robinson (Moxie), Joey Brooks (Molly’s game), Brennan Cook (Encounter), Gideon Glick (Wonderful Mrs. Maisel), Fred Hechinger (The white lotus), Matt Helm (Macbeth’s tragedy), Steven Maier (The plot against America), Charlie Tahan (Ozark), And Robert Duvall (The judge).
The pale blue eye arrives in select theaters on December 23, 2022 and will be streamed on Netflix on January 6, 2023.
