Actor and director Osgood Perkins he is known for roles in films such as Legally blonde, NoAND The Monkeyand for his writing and directing efforts in films Long legs, The Monkey AND Gretel and Hansel.
But his roots in horror cinema go far beyond his life, starting with the film Psychoplayed by his actor father, Anthony Perkinsin the lead role of Norman Bates.
Now Oz Perkins is speaking out against Ryan Murphy’s final season of Netflix Monster anthology series entitled Monster: The Ed Gein Storywhich Perkins says he “wouldn’t look at with a 10-foot pole”, given the creative liberties taken and the show’s depiction of his late father Anthony Perkins (played by Joey Pollari).
Perkins criticized streamers for taking the true crime genre and turning it into “fascinating and meaningful content,” telling TMZ that he’s worried about the culture and being “reshaped in real time by the masters.”
Osgood explained that the true crime genre is “increasingly devoid of context and that the Netflixization of real pain [ie the authentic human experiences wrought by ‘actual events’] He’s playing for the wrong team.”
In the third season of Monsternow available for streaming, Pollari portrays the Psycho (1960) star struggling as a closeted actor, being defined by his role as an assassin and feeling like a “monster” for being gay.
Although Anthony Perkins’ sexuality was an open secret in Hollywood, he remained married to Osgood’s mother, Berry Berenson, until her death from AIDS at age 60 in 1992.
While the final season of Monster is about Ed Gein, it is only partially based on his story, also touching on the influence of his crime on films like Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) e The Silence of the Lambs (1991).
Harold Schechter, author of the definitive book Gein Deviant: The Shocking True Story of Ed Gein, the Original Psychopathsaid that “a large percentage of the show is simply made up” and that Murphy’s latest controversial episode “deviates so wildly from the reality of the case. So much of it is pure over-the-top fabrication,” Schechter told the New York Post.
Murphy was criticized throughout the series’ run by the subjects and families of the people depicted Monsterwho is known for taking creative liberties with the stories of Jeffrey Dahmer, Erik, and Lyle Menendez.
For next season, Murphy will face Lizzie Borden, and given the timing of her alleged crimes, perhaps next season will be less scrutinized.
