Just a few days ago, Matt Reeves confirmed that he would oversee more movies in the “The Batman” universe, focusing on the villains of the Gotham Bat. And now DC takes a step forward in the production of ‘Arkham Asylum’, the second spin-off after ‘The Penguin’, which has already found a director and showrunner, the one responsible for ‘The Devil at All Hours’.
According to Variety sources, Antonio Campos will be the director and showrunner of ‘the Arkham Asylum’, Matt Reeves’ universe spin-off series ‘The Batman’, which will premiere on HBO Max. According to media sources, the Spaniard will also be tasked with serving as the show’s executive producer, but they clarify that the latter in case production goes on.
Since its original announcement in 2020, Antonio Campos becomes the third writer of ‘the Arkham Asylum’, as this series was originally supposed to be about the Gotham City Police Department. Terence Winter and Joe Barton were the first to be hired, but when the story changed focus, they both moved away from production,
For those who don’t know, Antonio Campos previously worked with Robert Pattinson in ‘The devil at all times’, a drama thriller for Netflix which also featured Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Bill Skarsgard, Mia Wasikowska, among many others. At the moment, neither Warner, nor HBO Max, nor direct representatives have wanted to comment on this signing.
All that is known about the “Arkham Asylum” series.
At the moment there aren’t many details about the history of the “Arkham Asylum” series, but Matt Reeves himself described the story as if it were “a horror movie or a haunted house, as is Arkham”. This title will be the second spin-off of ‘The Batman’, after ‘The Penguin’, which will star Colin Farrell, also in the role of Oswald Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin.
In case you didn’t know, Arkham Asylum is the psychiatric facility where all the bad guys from Batman and Gotham City are taken. Place where the events of “Joker 2” will also take place. So far, it is unknown who the enemies that may appear in the series will be, but it is believed that Barry Keoghan’s Joker and Paul Dano’s Riddler.
Matt Reeves’ interest in other villains such as Clayface, the Scarecrow or Mr. Freeze creates the theory that these could also appear in the story of “Arkham Asylum”. But for now, we have to wait to learn more about this “The Batman” spin-off that doesn’t have a release date.
