Todd McFarlane reveals variant cover for BATMAN / SPAWN # 1

Todd McFarlane is developing another Batman and Spawn crossover one-shot event comic and recently shared a variant cover for which he created Batman / Spawn # 1. McFarlane is working with Greg Capullo on the project.

“And I think the easiest and hardest part of doing a cover up with two guys who were big giant cages, is trying not to let those pieces of cloth get in the way of each other and separate each of them and make them big enough to read. So if you get too far, they have become a cloak cover and if you get too close it pretty much becomes the standard superhero cover. So your composition as you have seen on a bunch of variant covers counts, especially with two characters the silhouette can be quite similar.

“To me, the design of any spawn / Batman cover is that a boy is red and a boy is blue and that these two pieces of information should never get lost in clarity and that you will be able to read a cover in a heartbeat with these two covers. So Greg Capullo and I were getting a lot of ideas busted. He has a cover he’s doing that I helped inspire the idea a bit. This one you saw here, Greg and I talked about it, he helped me with part of the design and gave me some tips on how to make it happen since I just made 48 pages. So, even to the end, Greg and I are both helping each other. So you know, hopefully fans will enjoy this cover as much as they enjoyed Greg’s two covers and all the other variations. “

Batman / Spawn # 1, the release is scheduled for December 13 from DC Comics. The company is also relaunching Batman / Spawn: War Devil in a few weeks on November 15th. The new issue will be 48 pages long and will be available in most comic book stores, online and Barnes & Noble.
