It takes forever to achieve this Metal Gear Solid movie made! Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has been developing this film adaptation for years. She made fun of what she was trying to do with the film, she got fans excited, but there hasn’t been much movement or discussion about it recently.
The most important thing that happened to the project in the last couple of years was the casting Oscar Isaac in the role of Solid Snake. He is perfect for the role! Earlier he explained that the creative team was still “looking for” the right story and likened that quest to “climbing through the air ducts” like Solid Snake.
Almost a year after saying this, it doesn’t seem like much has changed. In a recent update with CB, Isaac said, “We want it to happen. Get excited. What’s the script? What’s the story? What’s the solution? […] But I hope this happens because there is so much potential for it. It is an incredible game. It’s my favorite. “
The story of the original game follows Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat of Foxhound, who is a renegade special forces unit.
Speaking earlier of the adaptation, the director said so is shooting for an R-rating. He wants to bring all the madness of the game into the movie: “It’s about doing it at a price so that you can make the riskier version of it, with the balls to the wall, Kojima-san.”
The director also talked about a screenplay that was written for the film by Derek Connolly, saying he loves what he has: “Even if I wasn’t involved in this movie, I’d read that script and say, ‘Shit.’ It represents a different approach to a video game movie. It represents a different approach to how a three-act structure is put on the screen. “
So why aren’t they just moving forward with that script? Why are they still looking for the right story? Maybe when Isaac came aboard, he wasn’t so thrilled. Vogt-Roberts previously explained that he believes he has found a way to make the story work on screen, saying:
“The thing about Metal Gear is that it’s intentionally sprawling and it’s intentionally dense. It would be super easy to shred or do too much at once. And we spent the last little bit trying to really understand, of myself, the most inspired way to Kojima to tackle most of that story through a device that I think allows you to tap into … how to say it without ruining it? … regardless, we have a device that I think allows us to respect the breadth of the franchise, respect the Sprawling nature of the franchise, respect the somewhat convoluted nature of the franchise at times. But to still show you the mirrors. What I mean by this is that all those timelines basically exist because they show the repetition of war over time. They show repetition and repetition. the cycle of pain over time. So it’s nearly impossible to just tell one story now. You need the whole bottom line of this game. “
The director also shared some concept art for the film, which you can see here. Hopefully, the film project really starts making a real move soon. This is a movie I’ve been looking forward to!
