The popular 2002 dystopian novel YA by author MT Anderson Diet is receiving the feature film treatment and is said to be one of the most acclaimed YA novels of the past two decades.

20th Century Studios acquired the rights to the novel and they went ahead and hired Stanley Kalù write it and direct it. Kalu is a 25-year-old Nigerian filmmaker who just graduated from USC. Zaccaria Verde will produce.

Diet was named one of Time the magazine’s 100 best YA books of all time and history is set in “a future dystopian America, where Internet connections directly feed the consumer’s brain. The plot centers on the romance unfolding between Titus Gray, an average guy on a weekend trip to the moon, and Violet Durn, a smart girl who has decided to try and fight the feed.

This is the official description of the book:

For Titus and his friends, it started out as an ordinary trip to the moon: an opportunity to celebrate during spring break and play with some silly low-weight at the Ricochet Lounge. But this happened before the crazy hacker caused all of their feeds to malfunction, sending them to the hospital lying with nothing in their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet, a beautiful and intelligent teenage girl who decided to battle feed and her omnipresent ability to categorize human thoughts and desires. Following in the footsteps of George Orwell, Anthony Burgess and Kurt Vonnegut Jr., MT Anderson created a not-so-brave new world and a clever, savage satire that captivated readers with his vision of an imaginary future that veers unnervingly close. to the here and now.

Diet was created through Kalu and Green’s recently launched Bantu Inc. banner, whose mission is “to produce socially relevant films from diverse directors, to create impactful social change through film and television.”

I did not read Diet, but it sounds like an interesting story that has the characteristics of a good movie. We just have to wait and see what comes out of it.
